New portfolio company specialises in waste disposal and recycling

29 December 2017

Novum Capital is acquiring Krefeld-based C.C. Umwelt, a leading disposal and recycling specialist for incineration waste in Germany. The acquisition agreement is effective as of 1 January 2018, and the sellers are three charitable foundations and three family foundations of the company’s founder, Manfred Wierichs.

Stable and profitable core business

C.C. Umwelt was founded in 1969, employs around 150 people and generated sales of approximately 100 million euros in 2017. Its stable, profitable core business consists of three areas: the disposal, reprocessing, and recycling of waste incineration slags; the disposal of flue gas cleaning mass (filter dust) from waste incineration plants in safe underground storage sites (backfill mines); and the processing and disposal of special mineral waste.

The company operates its own processing and recycling sites at its headquarters at the Rhine harbour in Krefeld, with further sites in Hagen, Würzburg, and Schwandorf. The investment portfolio of C.C. Umwelt includes landfills and backfill mines for the disposal of filter dust. At its Krefeld site, C.C. processes waste incineration slag as well as industrial by-products, returning them to the commercial cycle. The company’s scrap trading activities are also run from this site.

Plans for stronger focus and growth

Managing director and lawyer, Dieter Kersting, has been with the company for almost 30 years. He says: “With Novum Capital, we have found an investor who completely supports our strategy of combining maximum safety during waste disposal with high rates of recycling. As a result, we can continue to be an independent partner for municipalities, local authorities and operators of waste incineration plants.”

Novum Capital intends to swiftly focus the activities of C.C. Umwelt on the stable and profitable business of the disposal and recycling of incineration waste. In addition, Novum Capital plans to invest in the technical modernisation of C.C. Umwelt’s core business, to further strengthen the company’s market position and drive its growth.
